NYC Arts: Scenes of New York City, the Elie Hirschfeld Collection
The New-York Historical Society presents “Scenes of New York City: The Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld Collection,” on view October 22, 2021 — February 27, 2022. Philanthropists and art collectors Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld have gifted their curated, New York City-themed art collection to the museum’s permanent holdings. Featured are many artists new to the institution, including Marc Chagall, David Hockney, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Louise Nevelson, George O’Keeffe, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol.
The entire collection is a celebration of New York City: its buildings, bridges, parks, landmarks, and people. Iconic landmarks are featured throughout. Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Study for ‘Brooklyn Bridge” immerses the viewer into the suspension cables and gothic arches of the beloved bridge. Created around the time the artist left New York to live in New Mexico, the drawing is considered her ode to the city. Likewise, Arman’s “Statue of Liberty” and Peter Max’s “Liberty and Justice for All” offer reimagined ideas of the renowned monument in New York Harbor.
Curated by Wendy N.E. Ikemoto, curator of American art, with research contributions from Roberta J.M. Olson, curator of drawings emerita, this exhibition is a must-see for anyone in New York City.
