NY real estate developer Elie Hirschfeld grew up in New York City, and has built a notable collection of art works depicting the city that he loves. With the donated collection going on view at the New-York Historical Society next month, Elie gave the New Yorker a behind the scenes view of the works while they’re still in his Manhattan home.

New York City landmarks, scenes, and studies throughout many artistic eras and styles are represented, including works by renowned artists such as Willem de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alexander Calder, Thomas Hart Benton, David Hockney, Norman Rockwell, and many others.

Asked whether the works will be missed in the Manhattan apartment overlooking the Met, Elie Hirschfeld says he’s having each piece copied. “So I can look at them all the time, and I don’t have to have the shades down.”
