Elie Hirschfeld’s collection “Scenes of New York City,” which has been gifted to The New York Historical Society, is comprised of 130 paintings, works on paper, and sculptures. Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld intentionally acquired the art that expresses the many facets of New York City — it’s iconic landmarks, quiet scenes, famous artists, and art movements.

Ranging in date from the mid-19th through the 21st centuries, the show has been described as a visual love letter to New York City.

Elie Hirschfeld’s gift includes works by 82 artists not previously represented in the collections at the New York Historical Society, such as Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Louise Nevelson, Charles Burchfield, Georgia O’Keeffe, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol.

Accompanying the project is a beautiful “Scenes of New York City” catalogue published by D Giles Limited and edited by Roberta J.M. Olson, the NYHS’s curator of drawings emerita.
